bah humbug

Bah humbug, this grumpy bluebird is full of grouch this holiday, perhaps he has too much on his “to-do” list, or maybe he’s feeling less than confident that the real santa got his wish list. Hope all turns out well for him and his heart grows larger this holiday season! This original 6″x6″ oil painting on ⅛” gesso panel is available, unframed, for $100 in my Etsy shop here.

What's up chickadee?

I've been so busy lately that I am totally not keeping my head above water. I know you all know what I'm talking about. But it's all good and I'm still squeezing in painting time as much as I can. It does bring me peace in the chaos...

This sweet little chickadee, an original 6"x6" oil painting is on 1 ½" gesso panel painted on gold foil, needs a loving home. Find our more here.

golden-crowned kinglet original oil painting

A sweet golden-crowned kinglet was the inspiration for a painting I created over the weekend. A live video of it was on Instagram, too, which was really fun. (A great big thank you to everyone who tuned in to watch!) I feel like I'm being pulled in a million directions, even more than usual, with holiday commissions, a show to get ready for in December, and the craziness of this season with all the fun social events that need to squeeze into a week. But feeling grateful for every last bit of it. And the wonderful calm of my painting time is more precious than ever...

This little birdie is happy it's Friday, and so am I!

TGIF! Did you know...
  1. In the US it's common to hear people say "TGIF" which means "Thank God/Goodness its Friday!"
  2. The name "Friday" originates from the Norse goodness Freya. The day was devoted to the goddess of fertility, Freya—Freitag—Friday.
  3. If you are scared of Friday the 13th, you may have paraskavedekatriaphobia. That is the scientific term for your fear.
  4. Friday the 13th is very costly for society—according to research by psychologists, America loses money every time it occurs as a result to productivity decline.
  5. In maritime circles, it has long been considered unlucky to begin a voyage on a Friday.
  6. 90% of US companies have a "Casual Friday" dress code. Clothing is not optional, but is less formal than one other days.
These fun facts are from tipsywriter.com.

flycatcher

There are lots of varieties of flycatchers, according to allaboutbirds.org, and I think this one might actually be a Willow Flycatchers . They are brownish-olive birds that are best known for their voice. Look for them singing their distinctive song on top of willows and other shrubs in early summer just after they arrive from Central and South America where they spend the winter. Although they’re common across the United States, the Southwestern subspecies is federally endangered.

"Flycatcher" is an original 6"x6" oil painting  on ⅛" gesso panel and is available, unframed, for $100 in my Etsy shop here.

common yellowthroat bird painting

According to allaboutbirds.org, the common yellowthroats broad black mask lends a touch of highwayman’s mystique to the male Common Yellowthroat. Look for these furtive, yellow-and-olive warblers skulking through tangled vegetation, often at the edges of marshes and wetlands. Females lack the mask and are much browner, though they usually show a hint of warm yellow at the throat. Yellowthroats are vocal birds, and both their witchety-witchety-witchety songs and distinctive call notes help reveal the presence of this, one of our most numerous warblers.

This is a particularly handsome fella if you ask me, wonder what his witchety-witchety-witchety songs sounds like?!?

I’m over the moon excited to have my artwork included in a fun new shop opening soon in downtown Lancaster, PA. It will be called My Aunt Debbie and will be located at 336 N. Queen Street. It will be her studio and a specialty shop featuring adventurous handiwork, talented local makers (that’s me!), and cheerful heirloom textiles. It’s sure to be a fun destination filled with treasures. Oh, and this painting will be on display there along with a few other paintings of mine. Hope you can stop in if you are in the area!

white-breasted nuthatch

A common feeder bird with clean black, gray, and white markings, White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you right to them.
